KALYAN: The investigation into the assault on doctors and nurses at Kalyan’s Shastri Nagar Hospital gathered pace on Sunday after Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre surrendered before the Vishnu Nagar Police Station following the Bombay High Court’s rejection of his bail plea. On the same day, police also arrested Sadhana Karande, the fifth accused in the case, and produced her before a Kalyan court. The Bombay High Court on Saturday cancelled the bail granted to Mhatre by the Kalyan Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Court and directed him to surrender before the police. Complying with the order, Mhatre appeared at the Vishnu Nagar Police Station and was subsequently produced before the Kalyan court. As per the High Court’s directions, he is expected to be remanded to judicial custody and sent to jail. Earlier in the day, Vishnu Nagar police arrested Sadhana Karande, the mother of the pregnant woman whose alleged delay in treatment triggered the violence at the civic hospital. She was also produced before the Kalyan court for further legal proceedings. According to police, Karande allegedly joined Mhatre and his supporters in assaulting doctors and nurses after an argument over the alleged delay in the treatment of the pregnant patient. With her arrest, the number of accused in the case has risen to five. The incident took place at Shastri Nagar Hospital after family members and supporters of the pregnant woman accused hospital staff of delaying treatment. The situation escalated into violence, with doctors, nurses and other hospital employees allegedly assaulted inside the hospital premises.
