SHAMLI: Until last month, Ayush Malik was known locally as the only son of a Shamli pharmaceutical businessman. Within weeks, his marriage and religious conversion turned him into the face of one of Uttar Pradesh’s most politically charged conversion cases, drawing police action, protests by Hindu groups, multiple criminal cases and widespread debate over religious freedom and family rights.Over the past month, however, his personal life has unfolded in full public view, from announcing that he had embraced Islam and changed his name to Mohammad Ali, to marrying Chandni Qureshi, triggering a police investigation, and now returning to Hinduism in the presence of his family.Ayush’s decision first drew widespread attention after photographs of him offering Eid prayers went viral on June 8.The images quickly spread across social media and sparked protests by Hindu organisations, which demanded action over what they alleged was an unlawful religious conversion. His family subsequently accused Chandni Qureshi and others of coercing him into converting as part of a conspiracy to gain control over the Malik family’s property.Based on their complaint, police registered a case under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act against Chandni, her father and several others. The allegations transformed what had begun as a private family matter into a high-profile criminal investigation.Even as the controversy intensified, Ayush consistently maintained that he had embraced Islam voluntarily. In an earlier interaction with TOI, he said he had developed an inclination towards Islam from childhood, converted around four years ago and married Chandni of his own free will.He had also maintained that both he and Chandni were adults capable of making their own decisions and denied that he had been forced to change his religion.Weeks later, the narrative shifted dramatically after Ayush appeared in a video released by his family, in which he said he had returned to Hinduism of his own free will and apologised to his parents for the distress caused to them. The video showed him participating in puja and aarti at the family’s home, with his father, Devraj Malik, later confirming its authenticity and describing his son’s return as a reconnection with the family’s Sanatan traditions.
