Following viral internet health trends can carry severe, unexpected medical risks. Recently, a 56-year-old homemaker weighing 110 kilograms attempted to lose weight rapidly by adopting an extreme dietary regimen she saw on daytime television and videos. For three months, she completely eliminated carbohydrate staples like rice from her diet. Instead, her daily meals consisted exclusively of massive, concentrated quantities of green leafy vegetables and juices, including bottle gourd (sorekai), amla (nellikai), ash gourd (boodu-gumbalakai), and fenugreek (menthya) mixes, alongside a prescribed weight-loss injection.Such an extreme regimen led to serious health complications such as constant vomiting, swelling in the legs, and a consultation at a neighbourhood clinic. Blood tests showed decreased kidney function (serum creatinine levels from a healthy 1.0 mg/dL to a dangerous 3.0 mg/dL).She was referred immediately to a hospital for specialized nephrology care. The medical team started a clear diagnostic and treatment routine to find the exact cause of her AKI (Acute Kidney Injury). Doctors took a small sample of kidney tissue (biopsy) to examine under the microscope, which revealed dense deposits of oxalate crystals throughout her kidney tissue.Dr Kallappa Baligeri, Consultant – Nephrology from Manipal Hospital Millers Road, emphasized the critical nature of this finding, “Oxalates are naturally occurring compounds found in green vegetables and are safe in moderation. However, because the patient was taking concentrated volumes for 3 months her body over absorbed the compound crystallizing within her kidneys and causing severe inflammation. If we had not identified the root cause of the injury through the biopsy when we did, she would have completely lost her kidney function. It is a stark reminder that even ‘healthy’ foods can become toxic when misused in extreme amounts.”Because the protocol caught the condition before permanent scarring occurred, the management plan required no complex medication. The treatment simply mandated halting the extreme juicing regimen immediately, returning to a normal, balanced diet, maintaining excellent hydration, and approaching weight loss at a medically safe pace. Following this protocol, her kidney function steadily improved over the next month and a half, and her serum creatinine levels successfully returned to a healthy baseline of 1.0 mg/dL.
