Lucknow: Ever thought water hyacinth can be transformed into an excellent fertilizer, decorative storage baskets and eco-friendly handbags? Considered one of world’s most aggressive and destructive aquatic weeds, it is often spotted floating on Gomti river, posing risk to aquatic life. Many such conservation and productive techniques were exhibited during a ‘Green Fair’ organised by Lucknow University at the Institute of Wildlife Sciences on the World Earth Day held Wednesday. The exhibition served as a platform to advocate for environmental conservation and to showcase sustainable alternatives and conservation strategies. The fair featured 14 specialised stalls set up by various NGOs and eco-friendly groups, with focus on the ‘Mission LiFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative.Over 2,500 visitors, comprising primarily university students and faculty members, learned conservation strategies, recycling and eco-friendly techniques.“Exhibits made us aware of how temple floral waste is collected and is being used for making spiritual products like hawan cups and incense sticks and others,” said LU student Shriza. Convener of the fair, prof Amita Kanaujia, said the fair made students aware of eco-friendly ways and techniques.
