The United States has enforced a sweeping naval blockade on Iranian ports, with US Central Command confirming that no ships were able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz in the first 24 hours of operations.More than 10,000 Sailors, Marines and Airmen, backed by over a dozen warships and dozens of aircraft, are involved in the operation, which targets vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports. The blockade began after a deadline set by Donald Trump expired, escalating tensions in West Asia.In a post on X, CENTCOM stated, “During the first 24 hours, no ships made it past the US blockade and 6 merchant vessels complied with direction from US forces to turn around to re-enter an Iranian port on the Gulf of Oman. The blockade is being enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. US forces are supporting freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports”.The blockade is being applied to ships of all nations linked to Iranian ports, while transit between non-Iranian destinations is technically allowed. However, the heavy US naval presence has already disrupted shipping, with several vessels reportedly turning back.Meanwhile, CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said, “A blockade of Iranian ports has been fully implemented as US forces maintain maritime superiority in the Middle East. An estimated 90% of Iran’s economy is fueled by international trade by sea. In less than 36 hours since the blockade was implemented, US forces have completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea.”Earlier, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations confirmed receiving reports that “maritime access restrictions are being enforced affecting Iranian ports and coastal areas, including locations along the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and the Arabian Sea east of the Strait of Hormuz.”The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint, has emerged as a major flashpoint following the collapse of peace talks in Pakistan. Nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply transited through the strait before the conflict, and disruptions have already pushed global prices higher.The US has deployed significant naval assets in the region, including carrier strike groups and guided-missile destroyers such as the USS Abraham Lincoln, to enforce the blockade. These vessels are expected to intercept, inspect and potentially divert ships linked to Iranian ports.Despite the show of force, enforcing a blockade in the narrow and heavily trafficked strait remains complex. The region typically sees high volumes of commercial shipping, and analysts caution that sustaining such an operation would require continued large-scale deployment.Legal experts have also pointed to constraints under international law, noting that blockades must be impartial, formally declared and must allow humanitarian supplies.Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further escalation. Emmanuel Macron said France and the United Kingdom will host a conference in Paris bringing together over 40 countries to ensure freedom of navigation through the strait.In a parallel development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with President Trump on Tuesday, with both leaders stressing the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.The blockade is widely seen as both a military and economic pressure tactic aimed at curbing Iran’s oil exports. However, analysts warn it carries risks of escalation, including potential retaliation that could further disrupt global shipping and energy markets.
