Lucknow: From the next convocation onwards, Lucknow University will be awarding medals solely on the basis of marks obtained in the final semester theory examination, doing away with the role of internal assessment in determining winners. The decision was approved at the Executive Council (EC) meeting on Monday, which also cleared a comprehensive standard operating procedure (SOP) for educational tours. The revised medal policy follows the recommendations of a committee that examined the existing system.“The committee found that variations in internal assessment practices across departments and subjective marking often influenced medal outcomes, with winners frequently decided by margins of one or two marks,” university spokesperson Mukul Srivastava said.Under the new norms, internal assessment components, including assignments, quizzes, practicals, projects, internships and dissertations, will continue to be counted for calculating SGPA, CGPA, divisions and pass results, but will no longer be considered for medals and awards.“The university has the authority to amend the criteria for its constituted and sponsored medals,” Srivastava said. Also, as per the new rules for being eligible for a medal, a student will have to clear every internal and external examination in the first attempt.University officials said the changes were aimed at ensuring greater transparency and preserving the credibility of the institution’s highest academic honours. The EC also approved the list of degree recipients for the university’s 69th convocation to be held on Friday, where 1.25 lakh students will receive degrees. The total includes 93,536 undergraduate, 31,006 postgraduate and 419 diploma students, besides 30 enrolled in online education programmes and 248 PhD scholars. Women account for 54.38% of the recipients, while men constitute 45.62%.
