Lucknow: In a significant boost to sports healthcare, a collaboration between Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) and Allahabad University will ensure advanced medical support for university athletes in case of injuries.Under the agreement, the apex trauma centre at SGPGI will extend super-speciality treatment to players from Allahabad University. The tie-up has been facilitated by SGPGI’s orthopaedics department in coordination with the university’s sports board.Officials said the initiative will enable injured athletes to directly access expert care at SGPGI’s orthopaedics department, known for its advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities. This is expected to significantly improve recovery outcomes and reduce downtime for sportspersons. The collaboration was steered by head of orthopaedics Prof Pulak Sharma and director of the university’s sports board, Dr Sarvsureshth Dhammi, who played a key role in formalising the arrangement.Apart from treatment, SGPGI will also conduct periodic outreach programmes on the university campus. These sessions will focus on injury prevention, safe training practices, and early identification of sports-related injuries.Experts believe the initiative will not only provide timely medical intervention but also promote a culture of preventive care among young athletes, helping them maintain peak performance while minimising the risk of long-term injuries.
