One of many innovative schemes launched by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath since his ascend to power is Panchamrit Yojana. Itis a unique agricultural initiative of the Uttar Pradesh government aimed primarily at increasing the income of sugarcane farmers through scientific cultivation techniques, lower production costs, improved soil health, and higher productivity. The scheme was introduced by Yogi government with the broader objective of doubling farmers’ income.
Utility
Uttar Pradesh is India’s largest sugarcane-producing state and has millions of farmers dependent on sugarcane cultivation. However, farmers often face challenges such as rising input costs, declining soil fertility, water scarcity, and fluctuating productivity. To address these issues, the state government launched Panchamrit Yojana, promoting five modern and cost-effective farming practices.
Panchamrit: Five-fold interventions
As the name suggests, “Panchamrit” refers to five key agricultural interventions that form the foundation of the scheme. These techniques are designed to improve yield while reducing cultivation expenses.
The fve components of Panchamrit Yojana
1. Trench method of sugarcane planting
- Sugarcane is planted in trenches rather than on flat land.
- Improves root development.
- Enhances water retention.
- Increases crop productivity.
2. Ratoon management
- Scientific management of ratoon crops (subsequent crops grown from the stubble of harvested sugarcane).
- Reduces the cost of replanting.
- Improves yield from ratoon crops.
3. Trash mulching
- Sugarcane leaves and crop residues are spread over the field.
- Conserves soil moisture.
- Suppresses weed growth.
- Improves soil organic matter and fertility.
4. Drip irrigation
- Efficient water-use technology.
- Delivers water directly to plant roots.
- Saves water and fertilizer.
- Particularly useful in water-stressed regions.
5. Intercropping (co-cropping)
- Cultivation of additional crops between sugarcane rows.
- Generates supplementary income.
- Improves land-use efficiency.
- Reduces risks associated with dependence on a single crop.
Objectives of the schemeThe major objectives of Panchamrit Yojana are:
- Increase sugarcane productivity.
- Reduce cultivation costs.
- Improve farmers’ profitability.
- Enhance soil fertility and sustainability.
- Promote water conservation.
- Encourage adoption of modern agricultural technologies.
- Generate additional income through intercropping.
- Contribute to the goal of doubling farmers’ income.
Execution
The sugarcane development department identified progressive farmers and established demonstration plots to showcase the benefits of Panchamrit techniques. Initially, over 2,000 farmers were selected for model farms, which serve as learning centres for other cultivators. The government also provides:
- Technical guidance.
- Training programmes.
- Field demonstrations.
- Extension support through sugarcane development agencies.
Benefits to farmers
- Higher sugarcane yields.
- Lower expenditure on irrigation and inputs.
- Additional earnings through intercrops.
- Better resilience against climate variability.
For agriculture
- Improved soil health.
- Reduced crop residue burning.
- Greater water-use efficiency.
- Sustainable farming practices.
For the state economy
- Increased sugarcane production.
- Stronger sugar industry.
- Higher rural incomes.
- Enhanced agricultural growth.
Significance for Uttar Pradesh
As the country’s leading sugarcane-producing state, Uttar Pradesh’s rural economy is closely linked to sugarcane cultivation. Panchamrit Yojana seeks to transform conventional farming into a more profitable, technology-driven, and sustainable enterprise. By combining productivity enhancement with environmental conservation, the scheme represents an important step toward agricultural modernization in the statePanchamrit Yojana is a farmer-centric initiative focused on scientific sugarcane cultivation through five integrated techniques—trench planting, ratoon management, trash mulching, drip irrigation, and intercropping. By reducing costs, improving productivity, conserving resources, and promoting sustainable agriculture, the scheme aims to substantially enhance the income and livelihoods of sugarcane farmers across Uttar Pradesh.
